Birth & Postpartum Doula Services

Birth Doula Services

As a DONA trained Birth & Postpartum Doula and a member of the DAI I provide gentle and caring emotional & physical support, information & companionship to birthing mothers and their families during the pregnancy, labour, birthing and the post partum period. I offer comfort measures like breathing, visualizations, relaxation, movement, and positioning to help mum during her labour. I am there to continuously reassure and comfort mum. I will not judge her choices. I will support them. During my antenatal visits I’ll help mum and her birth partner become informed about various birth choices. I’ll also make sure that Dad or the birth partner is feeling supported on the big day.

I see myself as being a small part of a very special team and I am happy to be involved as much or as little as mum/dad need or want on the day.

What is a Doula?

A woman experienced in childbirth who provides advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth

Merrimam Webster Dictonary

Why hire a Doula?

Whether you plan to have your baby at home or in hospital the option of hiring a Doula is there for you.

We work respectfully along side medical staff, supporting you to have the best birth possible. Our maternity hospitals are becoming increasingly busy so having a trained Doula constantly present with you can have some very positive outcomes.

The Benefits:

Research shows that having a Doula present can:

  • Reduce incidents of c-sections
  • May shorten the length of labour
  • Reduces the need for epidural/ analgesics
  • Increases breastfeeding initiation & continuation
  • Increases mother’s satisfaction of her birth experience
  • Can reduce the incidence of postpartum mood disorders
  • Increases new parents’ confidence in the care of their newborn

But will Dad/ Birth partner feel left out?

A doula does not replace the partner but rather encourages the partner to be as involved as his comfort level allows. Depending on the couples needs and wants a Doula can be very involved or simply a reassuring presence on the day. As one mum describes, “My husband wasn’t initially sure about using a doula but we got to know her well throughout the pregnancy and on the day he found it a great relief to have her there. It meant he could go through this with me—he could have his own experience knowing that my doula would provide all the additional support I needed. It took the pressure off of him—he was really worried about how he would perform on the day.”

"Asking your husband to be your sole guide through labor is like asking him to lead the way on a climb of Mt Everest. He may be smart and trustworthy, you may love him, but in the Himalayas you’d both be a lot better off with a Sherpa!"

Pam England

"If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it."

Postpartum Doula Services

Whether you are a first time mum or are expanding your family, the transition can sometimes take a little getting used to. This is where a Postpartum Doula can help. I love nothing more than supporting mums and their families at this incredibly special time and I feel privileged to visit a family at home and help them find their new ‘normal’! Having an independent person present in your home can make a huge difference to how you process and recover from your birth experience and how you take on your new role as a mum. This is especially relevant if this is your first baby, as it’s not just a baby that has been born; a mother has been born too. If you are growing your family, having a helping hand to assist with your older children will allow you to focus on your baby when you need to.

Instead of worrying about everything else that needs doing you should be left to completely enjoy your ‘baby bubble’, as this time goes all too fast.

No family is the same, so I tailor my work to suit each individuals needs. I don’t ‘take over’ from your partner, mother or mother in law. I am an additional, independent, support and this works well as it leaves other family members free to really savour this special time with you, the mum, and your precious new bundle!

So much information will be given to you when you become a parent. I am there to support your parenting approach. I am a good listener and will encourage you to develop your own parenting philosophies and help you figure out what works for you and your family.

Doulas know new mums can feel lonely or anxious. They know you need to laugh. They know that adjusting to motherhood can be a struggle sometimes. They know they don’t need an opinion on how you choose to feed your baby. They know that taking care of the house can feel impossible. They care about how YOU are doing first and foremost. They know how to listen.

After your baby’s birth you begin your postpartum journey – I can be there to make it as fulfilling & empowering as it can be.
